News from Tadworth & Walton Overseas Aid Trust (TWOAT)
Now that the path out of lock down has been outlined by the Government, Tadworth & Walton Overseas Aid Trust has started to plan its activities for the rest of this year. We hope to organise a Quiz Evening in May where teams of up to six might assemble in one of the team members’ homes and participate via Zoom. This will depend on the restrictions for indoor gatherings that apply.
We have decided that our two annual John Allinson Sponsored Memorial Walks should take place in September rather than the usual May June slots. This gives a bit more contingency than an earlier date and hopefully will enable us to follow our recent pattern of walking a figure of eight course centred on a pub where participants can enjoy a lunch together. It will also give our supporters a bit more time to get in trim for a longer distance walk than they may currently be tackling!
We are hoping that we might be able to stage a musical event in a supporter’s garden during July or August and we plan to hold our Annual Social Meeting as usual in October. It is a great relief for us to be able to start planning for fund raising events again as we are now eating into our reserves to maintain support to our projects.
We had a very interesting Zoom session with our contact for the Myanmar Refugee School we support on the Thai border. The pictures of the children enjoying the lunches we fund were enchanting but it was a reminder that we have only been able to send enough money for the 152 children to have just 3 lunches per week. Currently this is all they get as no other charity is supporting them for school meals and the refugees’ parents are not allowed to earn money by the Thai government. It costs £23 for each day that the school provides lunches. In our current fund raising situation we cannot afford the extra £900 needed to pay for an additional day’s lunch each term-time week.
