Diamond Jubilee 2012 – Street Party

Monday 4th June 2012

Early on the morning of Monday 4th June, Waterhouse Lane was closed between the Village Hall and the Kingswood Arms, and bunting, marquees and tables replaced the normal parked cars. The sun came out, and as the clock moved to midday the streets filled up.

The shop windows had been decorated with individuality and flair, and the party spirit descended!

Over two thousand adults with their children joined the party which was opened in style by Tim Vine, who also compared the day, handed out the raffle prizes and then announced that the prize for best decorated shop was won by Tudors.

Children dressed as kings and queens paraded through the street led by the Excelsior Vintage Jazz Band.

Many others had their faces painted and a lot of red, white and blue could be seen throughout the street.

Also from the central marquee, a group from KADDs entertained us with songs from the musicals which have been heard in the West End during the last 60 years, and we were all encouraged to join in, which people did with gusto.

The music switched to the other end of the street, where we were entertained by Deadlines featuring Kat Jackson and Shaky Ground (joined by Tim Vine for one number – watch the video here).

The Kingswood Arms, Boscoreale, Waterhouse Cafe and Kyhber Tandoori kept us fed and watered in style, not forgetting the WI’s cake stall.

Children enjoyed playing tennis in the street with the Kingswood Tennis Club, trying out pottery, icing biscuits, fishing for ducks and climbing on a fire engine.

In the Village Hall you could see the Jubilee themed cake competition and a display of historical photographs of the area. The party continued on even after the street reopened at the end of the afternoon!
