Alarms/CCTV
If you do not have an intruder alarm, there are two organisations that Police recommend you consult, when considering having an intruder alarm or CCTV fitted. Their web pages below offer search facilities for local companies who carry out their accredited installations. These companies will inspect your property and provide a detailed quote for the alarm and or CCTV system. It is advisable to get at least three
quotes:
National Security inspectorate (NSI).
https://www.nsi.org.uk/your-workplace/intruder-alarm-systems/
Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB)
https://ssaib.org/
We would recommend anyone considering CCTV should look at some guidelines provided by the Information Commissioner Office: https://ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/domestic-cctv-systems-guidance-for-people-using-cctv/
Doors and windows
If you are considering new windows and doors, ask your installer to quote for products certified to PAS24 – 2016 standard. For additional security for windows and patio doors, laminated glass meeting the
requirements of BS EN 356:2000 class P1A, should to be installed on the internal pane. Particularly of ground floor and easily accessible windows. Laminated glass is best, but security can be improved by covering the glass panes could be covered with anti shatter security film.

Locks
If you have Eurolocks on your external doors, we recommend you consider upgrading the lock cylinders to TS007 3* (three star) standard, using a listed locksmith, from the Master Locksmiths Association.

For an explanation of why this change should be considered, please look at the following company’s web site: https://www.abs-secure.co.uk/
There are numerous companies that can supply the TS007 3* lock.
Patio Doors
If you have double door patio doors with 2 handles, consider a ‘Patlock’, an additional French Door and Conservatory Security Lock. https://www.patlock.co.uk/
Rear Gardens
Protecting the rear of your property is very important. Ensure your fences are in good order. Generally the maximum height for a rear garden fence is 2 metres. For the national planning rules on fence heights follow this link:
https://www.planningportal.co.uk/info/200130/common_projects/20/fences_gates_and_garden_walls
(Check with you local authority regarding any local planning rules and talk to your neighbours before installing new fencing.) The garden should be secured with a robust gate of the same height as your fencing. Ensure that it cannot easily be climbed over. One example of a locking system that enables you to lock the gate from either side, is a ‘Gatemate’: https://www.lockandkey.co.uk/products/gatemate
for additional security, add: https://www.lockandkey.co.uk/gatemate-Sold Secure security-escutcheon
Fence Panels
Most fence panels can be lifted up to allow either complete removal or give sufficient space to crawl under the raised panel.
There are devices on the market that are designed to make this more difficult. For an
example see:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fence-Panel-Grips
Safes
Consider a good quality home safe installed meeting the following standard LPS 1183: Issue 4, BS EN 1143-1: 2005 which complies with official insurance rating standards and is secured to a wall or to the floor. Install the safe in a location which is not seen, even if a drawer or cupboard is opened.
